Reading
The Money Secret is only a beginning: putting the secret into practice is what counts! Here are just some of the practical ideas other readers have implemented as a result of reading the book:
Try your local corner shops. I spent well over £3 on a tube of toothpaste from a well-known high-street pharmacy. My local shop was selling it at £1.99!!Anon, St Helens
Constantly check prices of those things you buy regularly, eg petrol, to make sure you are getting the best price.
I advise my children to write down what they spend so they can account for every penny. Eventually you will get into the habit.
Only take your debit card with you when you are going out to buy something ie the weekly shop, petrol, etc, you only need to carry a small amount of cash in your purse for emergenciesLiz Khalil, Farnborough
I have recently started using mysupermarket.com I've found it really useful because I can write my weekly menu, write my shopping list and if, half way through my shopping I think 'do we have any of that left', I can go and check the cupboard rather than buying it just in case. Sitting down shopping with a cup of tea means that I am able to be focused on what we really need rather than impluse buying as does seeing the total adding up at the top! The site has great features such as comparing your trolley with other supermarkets, suggesting cheaper alternatives and vouchers at the end too. I have been easily saving the cost of the delivery by making considered purchases rather than feeling rushed and harassed in the supermarket. Also I am able to avoid 'pester power' from my 3 year old daughter.Sarah, Stratford upon Avon
This book has sympathetically freed me from the guilt and despair associated with the debts I do have. The supermarket chapter was particularly good and chillingly true. This book is going to do wonders for many people.David, Leigh, Lancashire
After planning a week's menu, making a shopping list and doing my supermarket shop, I have not carried any more cash with me. I avoid looking at shops if I have to pass near them and have made a resolution to find other ways of enjoying a day out rather than casual spending. I saved leftover cash for bigger items when they ran out. It has been surprisingly fun!!Phyllis Parish, Dagenham, Essex
